The three women chosen to represent Chongqing are not considered representative of the city's high standards of beauty, netizens feel.

Photos of the three contestants in the Miss China pageant representing Chongqing — a sprawling megacity in the country's southwest known for its beautiful women — have disappointed internet users in China, who have said the three women are "ugly" and may have been chosen for corrupt reasons, according to internet portal Sina.

The results of the 52nd Miss Chinese International Pageant — held in Chongqing from June 30 to July 6 — were eagerly anticipated and after several rounds of talent contests, the top three women from Chongqing were revealed.

Yet disappointed netizens took to their microblogs to forward the photos and complain that the women were not up to snuff.

"If you say this is the standard of beauty in Chongqing, I will be embarrassed to admit that I am from there," said one internet user.

"Feng Jie (a female netizen known for her unsightly appearance and outlandish comments) would regret not taking part in the contest, she would definitely be the champion," said another.

Other netizens said the top three look much older than their reported ages. "The one on the far right: could it be her mother receiving the award on her behalf?"

Rumors are circulating that there was a hidden agenda behind the selection; one judge revealed privately that the selection committee was under pressure during the competition's final stage, and that the results were the result of a consensus.

"As a judge, I'm very disappointed with the results. I think (the women) do not represent the image of Chongqing's beauty," said the judge, who spoke on condition of anonymity
