Matsu residents to receive US$2,600 a month from casino

Weidner Resorts promised residents of Taiwan's outlying Matsu islands on July 9 that each of them will receive monthly reimbursement of NT$80,000 (US$2,600) in five years after their planned casino has been built.
Once the resort is completed and launched, every Matsu resident will receive a monthly compensation of NT$18,000 (US$600) immediately and it will later become NT$80,000 (US$2,600) a month in five years, said William Weidner, COO for Weidner Resorts Taiwan, the developer that is planning to build a resort in Matsu that will include the casino.
Weidner said his company will act in good faith. "The most important thing to do at this moment is to...make it legal," he said. "A reasonable waiting time for that would be 12 to 18 months."
According to the company's plan, the expansion of Matsu's airport and harbors will be their main priorities, followed by construction of a bridge that connects the main islands of Beigan and Nangan, as well as a convention center, hotel, shopping mall and university. The total revenue for the first year is estimated to be around NT$48 billion (US$1.6 billion).
"Approximately NT$60 billion (US$2 billion) will be spent on this project and the entire construction will be completed at best within three years," Weidner said.
Weidner Resorts Taiwan estimates 1 million tourists may visit Matsu during the first year of the casino's operation, while approximately 6,000 to 8,000 jobs may be created. Weidner also promised that the main shares of the company will come from the United States instead of Chinese competitors but he admitted that the bulk of future visitors will be from China.
Matsu residents this week voted to approve the construction of a casino resort on the islands, which lie just off the coast of mainland China, under laws recently introduced in Taiwan which allow gambling on the country's outlying islands, with the prior consent of local residents.
