Huaxi, a village in Jiangsu province in eastern China hailed as the "No. 1 town under the sky" has established its own airline and will operate two helicopters for local tourism and emergency aid.

Jiangsu Huaxi General Aviation Company was approved by the Civil Aviation Administration of China last year and began operations on July 26 this year. The town — the richest in China by per capita income — has invested over 1 billion yuan (US$157 million) in the airport and bought two helicopters last year. They will be operated by a licensed chief pilot with 3,000 flying hours and five aviators.

The airline company also hired maintenance crew and professionals specializing in aviation communication, control and meteorology.

The two helicopters will be able to take two to four tourists a flight from Huaxi airport to the neighboring cities of Jiangyin in four minutes and Wuxi in nine minutes, at a flight level of less than 3,000 meters.

Huaxi is known for its wealthy residents, who have an annual income of at least 80,000 yuan (US$12,555) and boast villas and luxury cars. The town has become a tourist attraction and is visited by over two million people a year. It has also become a leisure and holiday resort for people in the
Yantze River Delta area. Longxi International Hotel, a 328m-tall skyscraper opened during the town's 50th anniversary, has become a local landmark.
