At least 11 people have been killed after a dam collapsed during a flood on Friday morning in the city of Zhoushan in eastern China's Zhejiang province.

A report by the state news agency Xinhua said the Shenjiakeng reservoir collapsed around 5am on Aug. 10 and flooded a village downstream. Another 27 people were injured during the flood.

Xinhua reported that Zhejiang has been lashed by heavy rain over the last few days with the arrival of Typhoon Haikui, which made landfall on the coast early Wednesday morning before moving into neighboring Anhui province.

Hong Kong's Ming Pao quoted an anonymous source who claimed that more than 60 people have died and another 500 are missing because of the flood. The Hong Kong newspaper reported that the dam is a privately owned reservoir for processing tap water. The cause of the disaster may be due to human negligence as the owner refused to repair leaks in the dam, the source said.
