Hunan 17-year-old who sold his kidney for an iPad sues

A 17-year old from Chenzhou in south-central China's Hunan province is asking for 2.8 million yuan (US$358,000) in compensation from a man who gave the teenager money in exchange for his right kidney, according to the Chinese-language Beijing News.

The man accused, Yin Shen, was hired by He Wei, a black market trader, to find people willing to sell their kidneys, which can be resold illegally for large amounts of money. After posting a message on the instant messaging service QQ offering a handsome sum of 25,000 yuan (US$3,945) for a willing donor, the 17-year-old named Wang, who at the time was starry-eyed over Apple's iPad 2 and iPhone and was looking for a means to buy them, got in contact with Yin.

Wang and another willing donor surnamed Huang were located by Yin Shen between Apr. 18-19 last year. They were sent to the First People's Hospital in Chenzhou to undergo the procedure, where Yin Shen was able to pay Song Zhongyu, a doctor from Yunnan province, about 52,000 yuan (US$8,200) to extract one kidney from each donor.

Yin also paid Su Kaizong, the hospital's urology director, 60,000 yuan (US$9,400), to let them use an operating room. They forged Wang's age on his documentation to make it appear that he was of age and could undergo surgery without consent from a parent or guardian.

Yin and his contact in the black market sold Wang's right kidney for 200,000 yuan (US$31,500). Wang, who was severely weakened by the surgery, only received 22,000 yuan (US$3,500), enough to buy his iPad 2.

Now the young man has brought his case to court, his lawyer is demanding 2.8 million yuan (US$358,000) as indemnity for the illegal surgery. All parties involved were brought to the court and have admitted to their part in the scheme, though Wang could not be present due his weak condition.

The case was declared closed on Aug. 10.
The People's Court in Chenzhou's Beihu district has yet to arrive at a verdict or sentence.
