A theme park in Guilin in the southern Chinese region of Guangxi has launched a festival called Summer Loves Mini-Skirts.

Women wearing skirts less than 38 cm can enter the park for half-price — 110 yuan (US$17). Despite criticism of the scheme online, the number of visitors to the park are increasing.

The campaign reached its climax on July 21 and 22, with short-skirted visitors getting in for 10 yuan (US$1.60). According to statistics on July 21, over 12,000 visitors converged on the park, reported Central News Services.

With the temperature hitting 36℃, women young and old alike wearing miniskirts were being measured in front of the ticket booths of Merryland theme park. Ladies wearing pants were also changing to miniskirts in the stalls near the entrance.

Some of them would change back into pants after entering the park. A female visitor surnamed Su said it's inconvenient but if it helps get the ticket price down, it doesn't matter.

Qiu Bohua, director of the theme park, said the Summer Love Mini-Skirts Festival has been held for six years since 2007. At first the festival to celebrate the park's upgraded status as a 5A-class attraction.

When the festival gained popularity, they then decided to continue running the festival.

July and August is the peak season for the theme park. Miniskirts not only greatly increase the number of visitors coming to the park but also create business opportunities for vendors. 20 meters away from the entrance lies a shopping cart displaying miniskirts in a variety of colors. The owner said he is targeting non-local visitors who do not know about the festival and did not prepare a miniskirt.

A skirt cost 30 to 40 yuan (US$4.70-S$6.30), which even with the cost factored in ends up being cheaper than the normal half-price ticket of 55 yuan (US$8.60). Normally he can sell 200 skirts in just one morning.
